So maybe it's no shocker that just in the past two weeks, dozens of Rochester area families have jumped at the chance to stretch their food budgets without having to sacrifice much.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - People are looking for ways to stretch every dollar, especially when it comes to food.

In this story 4 your Wallet, more western New Yorkers seem to be getting a little help from an Angel.

Many prayers are being answered by this Saturday supermarket in the basement of Cazenovia Park Baptist Church in Buffalo. The church is the host site for Angel Food Ministry, a non-profit organization which offers food at a greatly reduced cost, to people of any income level.

That's the goal of one mid-state organization, who shops in bulk to provide families and individuals with big savings on their grocery bills.

But their hard work didn't end there — on the heels of her own crisis, Tracy Robison founded a pantry program similar to the one she had relied on so she could help make life easier and cabinets fuller for other struggling families in the area.

Several days a week, the warehouse at Angel Food Ministries in Monroe, Georgia is a bevy of activity. Permanent and temporary workers fill hundreds of food boxes with groceries that recipients will get for $30.00, a discount of more than 50 percent. "There are frozen chickens, pork riblets, broccoli, rib eye steaks, burgers," said Johnny Willis, who oversees the massive operation.

Jody and Scott Eldridge had been thinking about getting involved with Angel Food Ministries when they took a trip to Ellwood City in August 2006

The Zelienople couple had been trying to decide whether they wanted to bring the ministry to the church they attend, Harmony-Zelienople United Methodist Church. So they went to Ellwood City to watch the monthly process of churches picking up the food for distribution.

They were immediately sold.

"In this economy, you would think the program would have expanded, but it has not," said Ruth Crawford, volunteer coordinator at Colonial Park United Methodist Church in Memphis, one of about two dozen host sites in West Tennessee.

"I think it's the misconception that it's just for the poor, the needy."

A Cradock church has become the second site in South Hampton Roads through which people can order boxes of less-expensive groceries each month. Cradock Baptist Church has been designated a host site for Angel Food Ministries. Angel Food Ministries this month is again offering low-cost food boxes, including a "senior box" of 10 frozen individual meals, at Lighthouse Assembly of God to persons interested in saving money on their grocery bills. There are seven food boxes available in October. The prices include sales tax. Being offered are:

* The senior box of 10 individual meals that are nutritionally balanced for seniors. Each of the following meals come with two vegetables or fruit, and a starch: barbecue chicken, meatloaf with gravy, sweet-'n-sour chicken, meat patties with gravy and onions, spaghetti with meat sauce, salisbury steak with brown mushroom gravy, thyme-baked chicken, creole baked white fish, chicken curry with vegetables and ground beef stroganoff, all for $28.

 

The News (Salem, Arkansas) - "Feeding families through ministry"

Everything is expensive these days with the ever soaring price of gas and oil. Even those who have jobs are having to tighten their budgets, but they and their children shouldn't have to starve. Angel Food Ministry was founded in 1994 by Joe and Linda Wingo, of Monroe, Ga. The city was facing a factory shut down and many of the Wingos' neighbors were jobless. According to www.angel foodministries.com, the couple didn't want to see their neighbors and friends go hungry so they bought food and sold it at a reduced price from their back porch. They were able to feed 34 families that day. Now the Angel Food Ministry has grown to where it can feed up to 500,000 families a month in 35 states. The ministry can sell discounted food to anyone who needs it. There are no forms to fill out or financial qualifications.
